Buttigieg 2020: Grassroots Movement Hopes to Encourage Bid

Mar 16, 2018

A new grassroots movement based in Washington, DC hopes to encourage South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg to run in the 2020 presidential election.

The movement has no association with Buttigieg or his campaign. Mark Meier lives in Washington DC, and launched the effort, despite never meeting the South Bend mayor. But, he says Buttigieg has a lot of the qualities the Democratic Party needs in a candidate. He said it all began when he read an article about the mayor.

“Someone like Mayor Pete puts the serve back in public servant,” Meier said, “and (who) is really focused on getting things done, but also leading with integrity and a vision for the future, that’s a candidate that we need running for the Democratic Party in 2020.”

Meier said the goal of the movement is to show Buttigieg how much support he has across the country. He says he’s seen the most enthusiasm from Millennials and the LGBT community.

“Buttigieg has the qualities that we need,” Meier said, “especially in the Trump Era where public service has taken such a hit.”

Meier plans to continue promoting the movement and Buttigieg through social media in an effort to engage support. He says the next step will be to garner support in Iowa, as the 2020 presidential election draws closer.
